TamoxifenActive Ingredient:Tamoxifen CitrateOther Names:Tamoxifene, Nolvadex, Tamox, Tamoximed, SoltamoxActive Half-Life:5-7 days
Tamoxifen Citrate is often classified as an anti-estrogen; however, it functions as both an antagonist and agonist, meaning it inhibits estrogen effects in some areas while mimicking estrogen in others.
This medication is commonly used by anabolic steroid users, though it is not a steroid itself. Steroid users may utilize it to mitigate estrogen-related side effects associated with specific steroids, but it is primarily employed during Post Cycle Therapy (PCT).
Effects of Tamoxifen:
For anabolic steroid users, the benefits of Tamoxifen Citrate can be observed during and particularly after steroid use. While it does not reduce serum estrogen levels, it binds to estrogen receptors in the breast, preventing estrogen from exerting its effects there. It may not effectively address water retention issues and does not provide sufficient protection against gynecomastia for all users, contingent on the individual's estrogen levels and genetics. In cases requiring greater protection, Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs) may be a better choice.
Additionally, Tamoxifen Citrate stimulates testosterone production, one of the most crucial effects for those using anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids suppress natural testosterone production; hence, many steroid cycles include exogenous testosterone to maintain adequate levels. After completing steroid use, a protocol to restore testosterone production is necessary. While it can occur naturally, it would be slow; Tamoxifen helps speed up this process and enhances its efficiency.
For breast cancer patients, the effects of Tamoxifen Citrate are more straightforward. Since estrogen can promote cancer growth, Tamoxifen Citrate prevents it from attaching to cancer cells, effectively starving the cancer. This treatment can be complemented with other medications; often, therapy begins with AIs before transitioning to a SERM like Tamoxifen Citrate. It is also sometimes used as a preventative approach for individuals with a significant family history of breast cancer.
Side Effects:Possible side effects include headaches, nausea, hot flashes, vaginal itching, abnormal bleeding or discharge, rash, reduced white blood cell count, changes in endometrial tissue, elevated triglyceride levels, and risk of pulmonary embolism.Administration Guidelines:
In breast cancer treatment, there are six dosing plans for Tamoxifen Citrate that apply to both men and women, typically ranging from 10-20mg twice daily. A common initial dosage is 40mg per day (20mg twice daily). Many breast cancer patients may continue at a lower dose of 10-20mg daily indefinitely after remission to prevent recurrence. For anabolic steroid users aiming to prevent gynecomastia while on cycle, a dosage of 10-20mg per day is standard. If this does not suffice, considering AIs may be recommended.
For Post Cycle Therapy (PCT), most protocols start with 40mg of Tamoxifen Citrate daily for 2-3 weeks, after which the dose is reduced to 20mg daily for an additional 2-3 weeks. A complete PCT plan often includes another SERM, Clomiphene Citrate (Clomid). For detailed guidance on PCT, please refer to "How to Come off Steroids."
