Tamoxifen Citrate is commonly known as an anti-estrogen, but it functions as both an antagonist and an agonist. This means it can inhibit estrogen activity in certain body tissues while mimicking it in others.
While not a steroid itself, Tamoxifen is frequently utilized by those using anabolic steroids to manage estrogen-related side effects associated with specific steroid usage. However, its primary application is during Post Cycle Therapy (PCT).
Effects of Tamoxifen
For users of anabolic steroids, the beneficial effects of Tamoxifen Citrate can be observed both during use and particularly after discontinuation. Though it does not reduce serum estrogen levels, it binds to receptors in breast tissue, preventing estrogen from attaching. It may not significantly alleviate water retention issues and may not provide sufficient gynecomastia protection for all men; this is influenced by individual estrogen levels and genetic predisposition. In cases requiring more robust protection, Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs) are advised.
Tamoxifen Citrate also stimulates testosterone production, which is crucial for steroid users. The natural testosterone production is suppressed when anabolic steroids are used, necessitating the inclusion of exogenous testosterone in almost all steroid cycles to prevent low testosterone levels. Post-steroid use, Tamoxifen can help accelerate the recovery of natural testosterone production more effectively than it would on its own.
Regarding breast cancer treatment, Tamoxifen Citrate's effects are more straightforward. Since estrogen promotes cancer growth, Tamoxifen prevents estrogen from binding, effectively starving the cancer cells. This method of treatment is often part of a regimen that may start with an AI before transitioning to a SERM like Tamoxifen, and it can also be used as a preventive measure in individuals with a strong family history of breast cancer.
Side effects:Possible side effects include headaches, nausea, hot flashes, vaginal itching, bleeding, discharge or discomfort, rashes, reduced white blood cell count, changes in the endometrium, raised triglyceride levels, and risk of pulmonary embolism. How to use:
For breast cancer treatment, there are six dosing regimens for Tamoxifen Citrate that cater to both male and female patients. Generally, dosages range from 10-20mg taken twice daily, with an initial dose of 40mg per day (20mg twice daily) being common in the first phase of treatment. Many breast cancer patients may continue with 10-20mg daily indefinitely after achieving remission to prevent recurrence. For anabolic steroid users, the standard dose for gynecomastia prevention during cycles is typically 10-20mg daily. If this dosage proves ineffective, considering AIs is recommended.
In terms of PCT, most plans commence with Tamoxifen Citrate at 40mg per day for 2-3 weeks, followed by a reduction to 20mg daily for another 2-3 weeks. A proper PCT routine often includes another SERM, Clomiphene Citrate (Clomid). For a comprehensive guide on PCT, refer to "How to Come Off Steroids."
